I am a quilter and hand-stitcher working with repurposed and inherited materials to explore how textiles root us in softness and remembrance.
I learned to quilt from my Grandma Cecelia who taught me to make lots of things for everyone you love, and my Grandma Evelyn who showed me how to create your own patterns and find inspiration in a leaf.
Hand-stitching is a central focus of my work. The slowness of handwork allows me to pay close attention and engage deeply with my materials and the meaning and emotions that emerge. My favorite materials to work with are small scraps, familial textiles, unfinished project pieces, and found fabrics.
I combine appliqué and embroidery, running stitch and hand-ties, scraps and traditional quilt blocks while drawing inspiration from traditional quilt patterns, tile and crazy quilts, mixed-media art, and poetry. I collage materials and techniques together, creating quilts that document, reflect on, and celebrate all that fills our lives.
I stitch while traveling throughout my home in Wisconsin - on car rides, with friends and family, along lakes, and in the woods. I often create as I go - incorporating nature imagery, evidence of the seasons, flowing lines, text, and significant fabrics.
I continue to find inspiration in the work of my grandmothers as well other quilters and artists including:
Quilters: Heidi Parkes, Zak Foster, Ekta Kaul, Gee’s Bend Quiltmakers, Terra Quilting Company, Rebekah Johnston, Farm & Folk, Folk Art Fibers
Artists: Georgia O’Keeffe, Amber Jensen, Kayla Powers
Contemporary Poets: Ada Limón, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Andrea Gibson, Ocean Vuong
